Webster’s Breech Turning Technique
Because major uterine ligaments balance and stabilize the baby within the pelvis, any change to the pelvic alignment can dramatically impede the position of the baby within the womb. The Webster Technique is defined as a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment that reduces interference to the nerve system and facilitates biomechanical balance in pelvic structures, muscles and ligaments. This has been shown to reduce effects of intrauterine constraint, allowing the baby to get into the best possible position for birth.
During pregnancy sacral misalignments can cause tightening and torsion of specific pelvic muscles and abdominal muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. It is these tense muscles and ligaments and their constraining effect on the uterus that may prevent the baby from comfortably assuming the optimal birthing position.
Gentle and Safe
We have seen many expectant mothers presenting in the breech, as well as transverse and posterior positions. The Webster Technique has been extremely successful in balancing the mother’s pelvis and assisting the baby in getting into the most optimal position for birth. The Webster Technique is extremely gentle as well as safe. While there are "baby turning" techniques such as External Version which moms report can be quite painful, the Webster Technique is extremely light force and remarkably comfortable, often relieving pressure and discomfort.
Our office utilizes a system analysis to determine which ligaments are most restricted within the mother’s abdomen. Based on this information, precise adjustments alter the tension, tone, and patterns of motion of the uterus and baby with the mom’s body allowing the baby to find its ideal presentation. Imagine a stranger standing too close to you in an elevator, just as you would take a step back or away to a more comfortable position, you baby naturally wants to be head-down. Given the opportunity to move, the baby will adjust within the abdomen just as you would in the elevator. Offer the baby that opportunity, and 17 out of 18 babies have freely taken that step, from breech to a natural, head down presentation.
"My midwife suggested visiting a chiropractor who specialized in the Webster Technique. The recommendation was a result of having a twin pregnancy with both babies in the breech position. One week before delievery and I am happy to announce that both babies are presenting head down. In addition to turning my babies, Dr. Rob has relieved my hip and lower back pain. I felt his treatment was respectful of what I was experiencing physically and emotionally."
